From June 24 through July 31,2004

Haim Chanin Fine Arts is pleased to present new works on paper by Spanish artist Ángel Haro, on view from June 24 through July 31, 2004. The exhibition features three large and seven mid-size abstract works on paper. These mixed-media works are representative of the artist's expressive gesture and bold, pure palette.

Haro uses a combination of oil and pastels to build powerful and dynamic compositions. Intense areas of color punctuate the space and establish an order or hierarchy over the multitude of smaller gestures, or half thoughts, that vie for attention. The spontaneous and intuitive marks are in accordance with the Neo-expressionist spirit; yet the visceral force present in each stroke makes the work distinctly Spanish.

Though abstract, Haro's paintings suggest landscapes. He compares his process to that of nomad hunters. Placed in a new setting, the artist or hunter first studies its structure, mentally divides it into primary elements and devises plans for its exploration. Only then are the senses primed to perceive and react to the most minute movements or changes. Haro's landscapes are landscapes of instincts, of innate reactions. He paints to understand, to give order, to clarify his thoughts. Two elements explain the work of Haro: the directness of his approach, where thought is simultaneous with action. And, his conception of painting as a process that develops in time. The work does not begin when the first mark is applied, but when the artist has forced the surface enough, when the marks have created a chaos that must be organized. Thus, the paintings mirror those territories that are actively occupied.
